How do I know if a company in Databook is a private company?

Private companies in Databook have a "Private Company" label above the company name.

Are Executive POV decks available for private companies?

Yes, executive POV decks can be generated for any company that is a Key Account in Databook.

How do you generate private company insights?

If a private company publicly reports its financial, strategic, or operational data, we analyze its own data. However, if they do not publicize this information, then we analyze its data relating to a set of publicly traded companies that form a peer group for the private company.

Please take a look at this article for an introduction to how Databook generates private company insights.

Why do we continue to use insights based on peer group data for some private companies?

Many private companies do not report their financial data, so we cannot obtain this data. Our peer-group based insights for these companies are the best alternative, given that it is an established methodology commonly used by strategy consultants to analyze private company performance.

How frequently will private company financial data be updated?

We will check for updates to financial data frequently for private companies that publish their financials, as we do for public companies. However, most private companies will likely provide less frequent financial reporting than public companies. Even some private companies that have quarterly data available may only report their financials on an annual basis.

I know this private company reports its financials - why don’t you have the financial data on Databook?

We partner with S&P Global for our financial data. They have financial data for most private companies that publicly report their finances, but there may be exceptions where S&P Global does not have the data available. It is not scalable for us to manually add, update and normalize financial data for individual companies.

Are unaudited private company financials comparable with audited public company financials?

Private company financials may not always be audited to account standards such as GAAP. S&P Global Capital IQ, however, makes adjustments to make financial data more comparable between different companies.

Do you cover every private company in the world?

We continue to expand our private company coverage and currently have over 10,800 private companies on the platform. We prioritize larger private enterprises, as they are best suited to our methodology for generating private company insights. They are also the private companies that our customers are most interested in.

Are there any types of private companies or organizations that Databook does not cover?

We do not cover non-profit or government organizations; our insights are designed for for-profit companies.

What happens if a public company goes private?

When it becomes a private company, we treat it as a private company with financial data. We would continue doing so if it meets the three conditions: Data recency, Historical data coverage, and Metric coverage. If it stopped reporting financial data, it would become a private company without financial data.

How many private companies will financial data be available for?

Data that we are unable to make available are private company data sourced from third parties such as Dun & Bradstreet. We then make additional data quality checks based on data recency, historical data coverage, and metric coverage to determine whether we can bring financial data for a private company onto Databook.

The private company I'm looking for is not on Databook. Do you know what I can do?

You can request a private company to be added to Databook by searching for it in the search field and requesting that we add it. Our data team will then review the request and get back to you.
